Rehabilitation Process for Displaced Families Affected by Violence in Manipur Begins

Imphal, March 17: The Manipur government has initiated a phased rehabilitation process for internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by ethnic violence in the state.

On Monday, State Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh provided this update in the assembly, responding to a query from Congress MLA Thokchom Lokeshwar Singh. The government is taking steps to gradually resettle those displaced by the violence back into their homes.

Previously, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced a provision of ₹350 crore in the state budget to assist women affected by the recent ethnic violence. According to the Chief Minister, this financial aid is expected to benefit around 350,000 women across the state.

Last month, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the Chief Minister met separately with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to discuss critical issues facing the state, including the rehabilitation of displaced individuals.

In response to another question, the Home Minister revealed that verification of 1,435 cadres from the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) has been completed. Each cadre is currently receiving a monthly stipend of ₹6,000.

The UNLF’s Pambey faction signed a tripartite peace agreement with the Government of India and the Manipur government on November 29, 2023. The Home Minister confirmed that this agreement is in effect and necessary guidelines for its implementation have been established.

He also mentioned that the Government of India has released ₹5.83 crore in five installments for the period from December 2023 to April 2024.

Meanwhile, in response to a recent attention-drawing proposal by Congress MLA Keisham Meghchandra Singh regarding hailstorm damage, the Chief Minister stated that directives have been issued to the relevant deputy commissioners to assist affected families.

The Chief Minister also noted that geo-tagged images of the affected areas will be made available. Relief efforts will prioritize the repair of damaged homes, followed by an assessment of crop losses.
