Kolkata, March 22: Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, has accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of being ‘communal.’ His remarks came after Banerjee participated in an Eid celebration on Red Road, where she launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Modi, reaffirming her commitment to stand with the people of West Bengal.
Adhikari was campaigning in Nandigram for the upcoming two-phase state assembly elections scheduled for April 23 and 29. Speaking to reporters, he stated, “Mamata Banerjee is herself communal. Namaz is for those who follow Islam. Does Mamata Banerjee practice Islam? She is not a Muslim. Special prayers are organized for women.”
He also accused the Trinamool Congress leader of misusing religious platforms. “Yesterday, at the Khilafat Committee event, she referred to the Prime Minister as an intruder. Who speaks like this at a religious event? I attend such events too, but do I ask people to vote for the BJP or say that the Chief Minister is bad?”
Regarding the BJP’s support from the Muslim community, he noted, “This time we are receiving significant support. Even on Eid, I visited Haldia. It was their festival, yet many attended my rally. More than 50 young Muslim men are present here as well.”
Adhikari highlighted the demand for jobs, stating that 30,000 youths from Nandigram are working as migrant laborers in other states, including 18,000 Muslims. “Over 3,000 Muslim youths are working in Maharashtra,” he added.
He remarked, “People have realized that the Trinamool Congress garnered votes in the 2021 elections under the guise of NRC. This time, it will be different. Neither Hindus nor Muslims are with Mamata Banerjee.”
On his campaign in Nandigram, Adhikari emphasized, “I am here not just for the elections but because this place is my home. The BJP has nominated me again from here. I have come to meet the workers and the people. Nandigram and Suvendu are synonymous.”
