Bengaluru, March 29: The reigning champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), secured a 6-wicket victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Saturday at their home ground. Following the smooth organization of the first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB expressed their gratitude towards officials and the state government.
It is important to note that thousands of fans had gathered outside the stadium to celebrate RCB’s first IPL title win on June 4, 2025. Unfortunately, a stampede occurred during the celebration, resulting in the tragic loss of 11 lives. This match marked the first significant event at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium since that incident.
RCB took to social media platform ‘X’ to state, “RCB sincerely thanks the Karnataka state government, Bengaluru city police, Greater Bengaluru Authority, Public Works Department, Fire Department, and Namma Metro for facilitating the smooth organization of our home match in Bengaluru last night.”
The team reiterated its commitment to fan safety, stating, “Our efforts and priorities throughout this season will remain the same: the safety and well-being of our beloved fans.”
Before the match, players, officials, and fans observed a minute of silence in memory of the 11 fans who lost their lives during last year’s title celebration. Both teams wore black armbands as a mark of respect. During warm-ups, RCB donned jerseys bearing the number 11. Additionally, 11 seats in the stadium have been permanently reserved in honor of those who perished. The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) unveiled a memorial plaque at the venue’s entrance to commemorate the 11 fans.
In the match held on Sunday in Bengaluru, SRH scored 201 runs, losing 9 wickets. In response, RCB chased down the target in just 15.4 overs, winning the match with 6 wickets to spare.
