Raw Onions: Beneficial for Some, Harmful for Others

New Delhi, April 2: Raw onions are a staple in Indian cuisine. They are commonly added to salads and various dishes, providing flavor and nutrition. Rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and essential nutrients, onions are often considered healthy. However, not everyone may benefit from consuming them.

Medical research indicates that raw onions can be harmful under certain conditions. It is crucial to understand who should avoid them.

Individuals with digestive issues should steer clear of raw onions. Scientific studies reveal that raw onions contain carbohydrates that may not fully digest in the intestines. These are known as FODMAPs, which can lead to gas formation. For those already experiencing gas, bloating, or indigestion, consuming raw onions may exacerbate these problems.

Similarly, people suffering from acidity or heartburn should also avoid raw onions. Health experts suggest that raw onions can increase acid levels in the stomach, potentially worsening acid reflux. This condition can cause food to flow back into the throat, leading to chest burning, sour belching, and throat irritation. For those with pre-existing issues, raw onions can act as a trigger.

In some cases, raw onions can cause allergic reactions. While not everyone is affected, those with onion allergies may experience immediate reactions. Research shows that symptoms can include skin itching, red rashes, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If someone exhibits such symptoms after consuming onions, they should cease intake and consult a doctor.

Caution is also advised for individuals on blood pressure medications. Raw onions contain compounds that can thin the blood. While this is generally beneficial for heart health, those already taking blood thinners should avoid excessive consumption without medical advice.

In surgical cases, raw onions can pose risks as well. Medical guidelines recommend avoiding substances that thin the blood before and after surgery. Raw onions fall into this category. For individuals who have recently undergone surgery, consuming them may increase the risk of bleeding and affect recovery.
