New Delhi, April 2: In today’s digital age, the increasing reliance on mobile phones, computers, and television screens poses significant risks to eye health, especially during the hot summer months. Prolonged exposure to sunlight, bright light, and screen glare can lead to common issues such as irritation, dryness, headaches, and blurred vision. Therefore, it is crucial to pay special attention to eye care.

These simple measures can be particularly beneficial for students and office workers who spend extended periods in front of screens. The summer sun and hot winds can adversely affect the eyes, making it essential to adopt these habits to keep them healthy and vibrant.

The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, recommends some of the easiest and most effective methods to maintain eye health during the summer. One such method is eye palming and the 20-20-20 rule. According to this rule, take a break every 20 minutes, look away from the screen, and focus on an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This small practice relaxes the eye muscles, reduces stress from changing focus, and alleviates eye fatigue.

Other easy eye care practices include palming. To do this, rub your palms together to generate warmth and place them over your closed eyes for 2-3 minutes each morning and evening. This provides deep relaxation for the eyes. Practicing Trataka, which involves staring at a candle flame or a black dot without blinking for a few seconds, can also be beneficial. This exercise enhances concentration. Additionally, performing eye exercises by moving the eyes up and down, side to side, and in circular motions can provide special relief during the summer.

Another simple tip is to splash cold water on the eyes. After returning from outside or taking short breaks, periodically splash cold water on your eyes. Reduce screen time, work in well-lit areas, and ensure you get adequate sleep each night.
