New Delhi, April 5: Former England right-back Kieran Trippier will leave Newcastle United when his contract expires at the end of the season, the Premier League club announced on Saturday.
The 35-year-old defender joined Newcastle from Atlético Madrid in January 2022. This move came shortly after the northeast club was acquired by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund while they were in the relegation zone.
Trippier has made over 150 appearances for Newcastle, scoring four goals during his four-and-a-half-year tenure at St James’ Park. He played a crucial role in helping the team secure the English League Cup, marking their first major trophy in 70 years, and achieving Champions League qualification twice in the last three years.
“This is where I have felt most at home,” Trippier expressed. “It’s emotional, and I’m really going to miss it.”
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe praised Trippier, stating that he “has helped to drive standards that have changed the club’s trajectory.” Howe added, “His leadership skills have been invaluable. In difficult moments, his experience has proved calming, and his drive and will to win have inspired the players to keep pushing forward.”
Newcastle has seven games remaining this season, all in the Premier League.
