Rajasthan Government Unveils Election Schedule for Panchayat and Urban Local Bodies

Jaipur, July 20: The Rajasthan government has presented a roadmap for the long-awaited Panchayat and urban local body elections to the High Court. The court had previously requested a clear timeline for conducting these elections.

According to the schedule submitted by the government, the election process will commence in August. The notification for the urban local body elections will be issued first on August 17, followed by the notification for the Panchayat elections on September 23. The government informed the High Court that the urban local body elections will take place before the Panchayat elections.

During the hearing, the government also revealed that a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary occurred on July 19, following the High Court’s directives from July 16. Officials from the State Election Commission, OBC Commission, Department of Local Self-Government, and Panchayati Raj Department were present at this meeting.

It was decided that the OBC Commission will submit its report by August 5. Following this, the lottery process for reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and women will be completed by August 15. The State Election Commission will then initiate the election process.

The High Court demanded not just assurances from the government but also a definitive election schedule. In response, the government provided the complete timeline. According to the government, the State Election Commission will conduct the elections within 90 days after the reservation process is finalized.

If the High Court approves this proposed schedule, the Panchayat and urban local body elections will be conducted in multiple phases, with the voting process expected to be completed by November 15.

This matter reached the High Court following various public interest petitions filed regarding the delays in the Panchayat and urban local body elections. Giriraj Singh Devanda filed a petition against the delay in Panchayat elections, while former MLA Sanyam Lodha approached the High Court regarding the delay in urban local body elections.

The High Court is closely monitoring this case to ensure that elections are conducted in a timely manner, as mandated by the Constitution.
