Jaipur, March 30: Senior leaders of the BJP targeted Congress on Monday for extending greetings on Rajasthan Day, accusing the party of being disconnected from the state’s cultural roots and traditions.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Jogaram Patel claimed that Congress shows no concern for “the soil and cultural pride of Rajasthan” and is fixated on “English calendar dates” instead of traditional Indian systems.
Earlier on Monday, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot congratulated the residents, stating, “Heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all citizens on the foundation day of Rajasthan, a land of valor, heritage, and entrepreneurship.”
He urged people to strengthen culture and social ties, enhance brotherhood, and ensure participation from all communities in development, reiterating his commitment to good healthcare and education.
In response to the Congress leaders’ greetings, Jogaram Patel noted that Rajasthan Day was celebrated on March 19 this year, coinciding with Chaitra Shukla Pratipada and the new Samvat year. He criticized Congress leaders for remaining silent during the traditional celebration, stating that their late greetings mock the sentiments of the public.
Patel further asserted that Congress fears losing its voter base if it embraces Hindu customs and traditions. He accused leaders like Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Ashok Gehlot of showing “hatred” towards the Hindu calendar.
Regarding historical context, Patel mentioned that the formation of “Greater Rajasthan” occurred on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada in 1949. He stated that the current state government, under Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, is attempting to reconnect with these roots by celebrating Rajasthan Day according to the traditional calendar.
Home State Minister Jawahar Singh Bedham echoed similar sentiments, alleging that Congress is against Rajasthan’s culture and Indian traditions. He remarked that extending greetings on March 30 reflects an attitude against “Hindu customs and Sanatan culture,” labeling it a “deliberate attempt to mislead the public.”
Bedham referenced the historical moment of Rajasthan’s formation, linking it to an auspicious conjunction of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada with Revati Nakshatra and Indra Yoga, a decision associated with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He questioned why Congress leaders ignore the sentiments tied to Patel and traditional customs.
He added that the state government’s decision to celebrate the new Samvat year as Rajasthan Day was aimed at honoring Indian traditions, with the occasion celebrated enthusiastically across the state on March 19.
