Patna, April 2: In a swift response to a case of alleged harassment and attempted rape of a married woman in Nalanda district, police have arrested a total of eight suspects. This information was confirmed by SP Bharat Soni on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in a village within the Noor Sarai police station area and came to light after a video of the assault went viral on social media.
Bharat Soni reported that following the arrest of the first two suspects, six additional individuals were apprehended, bringing the total to eight.
According to police, the incident took place on March 26 when the victim was returning home from a grocery store.
On her way, a group of assailants stopped her, verbally abused her, and attempted to forcefully engage in sexual acts. When the woman resisted and cried for help, the suspects harassed her, pushed her to the ground, and tried to commit gang rape.
The assailants also tore her clothes and recorded a video of the incident without her consent. This video was later circulated online with the intent to humiliate her.
Preliminary investigations revealed that some villagers had been harassing the woman prior to this incident.
After the video surfaced, police took immediate action, launched an investigation, and conducted raids to arrest the suspects.
The arrested individuals include Shailesh Kumar, Dashrath Chaudhary, Ranjan Paswan, Sachin Kumar, Domon Paswan, and Sonu Kumar. Previously, two suspects, Ashok Yadav and Matlu Mahto alias Navneet Kumar Narottam, had already been arrested.
The investigation and legal proceedings are ongoing. Police officials have assured strict action against all accused.
Nalanda police have registered cases against the suspects for harassment, violation of a woman’s dignity, attempted rape, intimidation, and under the IT Act at the Noor Sarai police station.
The victim resides with her in-laws, while her husband works in Maharashtra.
