Mumbai, April 1: BJP legislator Sanjay Upadhyay has accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of disrespecting the national song Vande Mataram. He claimed that during an event where everyone stood in honor of the song, Gandhi remained seated, which he deemed a blatant insult to Vande Mataram that cannot be tolerated.
In an interview with a news agency on Wednesday, Upadhyay stated that the central government has always honored Vande Mataram, a 150-year-old national anthem played at various events, where attendees are expected to stand. He expressed disappointment that Gandhi did not consider it necessary to show respect.
Upadhyay further asserted that Gandhi’s refusal to stand during Vande Mataram was an affront to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation. He highlighted that many martyrs faced execution while chanting Vande Mataram, and the song evokes deep patriotism. By disrespecting it, Gandhi has once again demonstrated a lack of faith in the anthem, according to Upadhyay.
He criticized Gandhi’s loyalty to the country, suggesting that his inclinations have always leaned towards China and Pakistan, while he consistently disrespects national institutions and historical memories. Vande Mataram, he emphasized, symbolizes India’s national identity, having completed 150 years, and should be mandatory at all national events.
Upadhyay also mentioned that discussions in Parliament regarding Naxalism have revealed Congress’s inclination towards the issue. He praised Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his commitment to eradicating Naxalism, reflecting the Prime Minister’s strong resolve.
He expressed gratitude to Shah for not only addressing the issue of Naxalism but also taking concrete steps to eliminate it.
Regarding the transfer of officials in Bengal, Upadhyay stated that the Election Commission holds the exclusive authority to transfer officials after elections are announced, should the need arise.
