Jaipur, July 19: A significant ruling was delivered by a court in Alwar, Rajasthan, on Saturday, sentencing nine individuals, including former BJP district president Inderjeet Singh, also known as ‘Pata’, to life imprisonment for their involvement in the Avatar Singh murder case. The court also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on each convict.
The judge, Harendra Singh, stated that failure to pay the fine would result in additional imprisonment as per legal provisions. Following the verdict, security measures were heightened around the court premises and Pata village to maintain law and order.
Among those sentenced to life imprisonment are Inderjeet Singh, Anup Singh, Kamaljeet Singh, Gurvachan Singh, Jaspal Singh, Kulwant Singh, Aman Singh, Harvinder Singh, and Vishvendra Singh.
During the trial, the prosecution relied on testimonies from 22 witnesses, medical and post-mortem reports, and documentary evidence collected during the investigation. The defense pleaded for leniency for the accused, but the court denied any reduction in their sentences, convicting all nine under relevant legal provisions.
The incident occurred on June 10, 2016, in Pata village, within the jurisdiction of the Naugawan police station. According to the prosecution, Avatar Singh was attacked following a dispute related to the village sarpanch elections.
The prosecution alleged that the attack stemmed from political rivalry and family tensions arising from the elections. They informed the court that the accused surrounded Avatar Singh and allegedly assaulted him with hammers, swords, knives, iron pipes, hockey sticks, and wooden sticks. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Subsequently, a murder case was registered at the Naugawan police station.
After the verdict, the victim’s son, Ajaypal, expressed relief, stating that after more than ten years of waiting, the family finally received justice. He thanked the judiciary for the decision.
Witnesses present in the court reported that some convicts were seen smiling and twirling their mustaches while being led away in a police van after the sentencing. This behavior drew criticism from those present in the courtroom.
