Rahul Gandhi Condemns Murder of Congress Worker in Asansol, Calls for Justice

New Delhi, April 26: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has strongly criticized the murder of Congress worker Debdeep Chatterjee in Asansol, West Bengal, following the elections. He has accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers of being responsible for Debdeep’s death. Gandhi stated that democracy is absent in West Bengal, replaced by TMC’s reign of terror.

On Sunday, Gandhi took to the social media platform ‘X’ to express his outrage, stating, “The murder of Congress worker Debdeep Chatterjee by TMC-affiliated goons post-election is utterly condemnable.” He extended his condolences to Debdeep’s family.

In his post, he further emphasized, “Today, there is no democracy in West Bengal; it is a rule of terror by the TMC. Intimidating, killing, and silencing opposing voices after voting has become the character of the TMC. Congress politics has never relied on violence, and it never will. We have also lost our workers, yet we have always chosen the path of non-violence and the Constitution. This is our legacy, this is our resolve.”

Gandhi also demanded full security and compensation for Debdeep’s family. He wrote, “The demand is clear—immediate arrest of all culprits, the harshest punishment, and ensuring complete security and compensation for Debdeep’s family.”

He asserted that they will not bow down to politics that tarnishes India’s tradition of non-violence. Justice will prevail.

Earlier, the Congress’s West Bengal unit alleged that Debdeep was attacked and brutally beaten by goons linked to the ruling TMC, leading to his death shortly after. According to the state unit of Congress, Debdeep Chatterjee was known for working alongside Prasenjit Puitandi, the Congress candidate from Asansol North.

The party stated, “This tragic incident highlights the complete breakdown of law and order in the state and raises serious questions about the safety of opposition workers in West Bengal. The fact that such violence occurred immediately after voting reflects a deeply troubling pattern of political intimidation and vengeance.”
