Mumbai, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : Rabbi Shergill, known for his unique musical style, has made a significant impact in the Indian music scene with hits like “Bulla Ki Jaana,” “Tere Bin,” “Challa,” and “Heer.” On October 5, during an interview, he expressed concerns that art is gradually losing its prominence, being overshadowed by entertainment. Reflecting on his previous comments from a decade ago, Shergill noted that little has changed in this regard.
When asked about the shifts in art and entertainment over the last ten years, he stated, “It largely depends on personal perspective. In my view, there is still less space for art today.”
Shergill raised thought-provoking questions, asking, “Have you heard any political songs in the last decade? Have you seen any political films?” He emphasized that art is not merely about entertainment; it serves as a medium to question society, politics, and everyday life. “I feel that art has somewhat disappeared,” he added.
His music uniquely blends Punjabi, rock, Sufi, and folk genres. Notably, “Bulla Ki Jaana,” based on a poem by the Punjabi Sufi saint Bulleh Shah, has become a defining piece of his identity, presented with a contemporary musical twist.
Shergill has also showcased his vocal talents in Bollywood. He lent his voice to the popular track “Challa” from the 2012 film “Jab Tak Hai Jaan,” directed by the late Yash Chopra. This romantic film featured stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Anushka Sharma, with music composed by A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Gulzar.
