Leaders from Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Somalia Unite on Sovereignty and Water Rights

Cairo, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : Leaders from Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Somalia have jointly issued a declaration emphasizing their countries’ sovereignty, the management of the Red Sea, and water rights. The leaders underscored the necessity of adhering to international law for regional stability and cooperation.

The “Al Alamein Joint Declaration” was released following a meeting of the leaders in New Alamein, Egypt, on Sunday. They expressed strong opposition to any external interference in the internal affairs of their nations under any pretext.

According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, the meeting included Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council.

During the discussions, the leaders addressed both regional and international developments. They also explored ways to enhance political, economic, trade, and cultural cooperation among their countries, while deliberating on several regional issues.

Regarding Sudan, the leaders reaffirmed their support for the country’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions. They opposed the establishment of any parallel governance structures or institutions within Sudan.

The leaders also rejected any recognition or support for the so-called “Somaliland.” They asserted that the management of matters related to the Red Sea is the responsibility of the coastal nations. The declaration stressed the importance of respecting international law regarding rivers that traverse multiple countries, including the Nile.

Particularly, they emphasized the principle that actions taken by one country should not harm another. They called for prior notification, dialogue, and mutual agreement in such matters to foster cooperation.

The leaders firmly opposed any unilateral actions that could jeopardize the existing water usage of the countries located downstream of the Nile River. This meeting comes at a time when Egypt is actively working to enhance coordination with countries in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region regarding security and stability.
