
New Delhi, August 19: Indian badminton star PV Sindhu secured her place in the women’s singles pre-quarter finals of the BWF World Championship by defeating Canada’s Zhang Wen Yu with a score of 21-16, 21-17. The match took place at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The ninth-seeded Indian player started strong, quickly gaining a lead with four consecutive points. Although Zhang fought back, she remained close in the score. However, Sindhu maintained control, reaching the interval with a slight advantage of 11-9.
After the break, Zhang continued to challenge Sindhu, but as the first game approached its climax, the Indian player kept her composure. Sindhu built a four-point lead at 19-15 and clinched the first game 21-16 in just 16 minutes.
The second game proved to be more competitive. Zhang did not allow Sindhu to dominate, leveling the score at 9-9 before taking an 11-9 lead into the interval, increasing the challenge for Sindhu.
Post-interval, the Indian player surged ahead with five consecutive points, regaining control and moving closer to victory. Despite Zhang’s persistent efforts, Sindhu showcased her strength as she capitalized on her lead, winning the second game 21-17 and wrapping up the match in 34 minutes.
With this victory, Sindhu advanced to the ‘final 16,’ where she will face China’s third-seeded player, Wang Ji Yi. Wang secured her spot in the next round by defeating Malaysia’s Karuvathavan Lethshana 21-16, 21-9 on the same day.
Sindhu’s win comes on a day when India also celebrated Ayush Shetty‘s advancement in men’s singles. He defeated Sri Lanka’s Dumindu Abeywickrama 21-8, 21-10 in just 26 minutes to secure his place in the pre-quarter finals. However, Sindhu’s focus now shifts to the crucial match against Wang on Thursday, where a spot in the quarter-finals is at stake.
