
New Delhi, August 19: The 65th Subroto Cup International Football Tournament commenced on August 18 at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi. The opening day featured an exciting match in the Under-17 Girls category, where Meghalaya triumphed over Chandigarh.
A total of 108 teams are participating in three categories: Under-17 Junior Girls, Under-17 Junior Boys, and Under-15 Sub-Junior Boys. Each category is divided into eight groups, with the winners from each group advancing to the knockout stage, culminating in the final matches.
The 65th Subroto Cup underscores a commitment to promoting grassroots football and providing a platform for young players to compete, develop their skills, and aspire to achieve greater heights.
Following the inauguration ceremony, the tournament was officially launched, with Air Marshal S. Shivkumar, Air Officer-in-Charge Administration and Vice President of the Subroto Mukherjee Sports Education Society, serving as the chief guest. Star player Lovepreet Singh from India’s national weightlifting team attended as a special guest.
Vibrant performances added color and excitement to the event, featuring a display by the Air Warriors Drill Team and a cultural presentation by students from the Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute.
Air Marshal S. Shivkumar remarked, “The 65th Subroto Cup is a testament to the enduring spirit of football in India. I believe this tournament will not only showcase the skills of these young athletes but also inspire many more youths to take up the sport. I congratulate all the teams that have qualified for the tournament and wish them the best of luck. May they play with true sportsmanship.”
