PV Sindhu Pays Tribute to Carolina Marin Ahead of Her Retirement

New Delhi, March 27: In the world of sports, players are often fierce competitors on the field, yet off the court, they share friendships and mutual respect. Indian badminton star PV Sindhu recently shared a heartfelt message for Spain’s Carolina Marin, who announced her retirement on Thursday, stating that badminton will always remember her.

Sindhu took to X to reflect on their rivalry on the court and their friendship off it. She wrote, “Some rivals become a part of your journey forever. Carolina was one of them. We first played against each other when we were around 15 or 16 years old in the Maldives, and since then, we have faced each other many times.”

She continued, “To be honest, you were quite a headache on the court. Your constant shouting, fierce demeanor, and little tricks could annoy anyone, but your skill, speed, and fighting spirit were unparalleled.”

Sindhu recalled a memorable verbal exchange during the semifinals of the 2023 Denmark Open, which led to the chair umpire showing both players a yellow card. “People remember big matches, including our heated argument over shuttle selection in that third set. I admit I was completely furious that day, but months later, we sat across from each other in Madrid, sharing coffee, talking, and laughing. In that moment, there was nothing but respect between us. That side of Carolina will always stay with me.”

She expressed gratitude for the incredible friendship that developed among their generation. “Our group of girls made women’s singles a very special event. Honestly, I don’t know if anything like this has ever happened in badminton history or if it will happen in the future.”

The two-time Olympic champion concluded her message by thanking Marin for every match, every lesson, and most importantly, their friendship. “Carolina, I wish you all the happiness in your life after retirement. Badminton will miss you dearly, and so will I.”

Carolina Marin, a legendary figure in Spanish badminton, announced her retirement due to injuries sustained, stating she has not fully recovered from an injury incurred during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Marin, who won the gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and is a three-time world champion, defeated Sindhu in the finals of the Rio Olympics.
