Punjabs Powers Under Threat, Claims Bikram Singh Majithia

Chandigarh, April 14: Bikram Singh Majithia, the General Secretary of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), sharply criticized the central government’s notification related to the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on Tuesday. He accused the government of undermining Punjab’s powers.

Majithia also alleged that the state government is colluding with the center and failing to protect Punjab’s interests. Responding to the central government’s notification regarding amendments to the BBMB, he stated that the center is stripping Punjab of its powers, labeling this move as an attack on the state’s rights. He emphasized that crucial decisions concerning Punjab, including those related to water, capital, and institutions, should be made by Punjabis, just like in other states.

He questioned, “As a resident of Punjab, I completely oppose this move. If there is a single law for the entire country, why is there repeated interference in Punjab’s matters?”

The SAD leader further alleged that this situation reflects a ‘collusion’ between Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and the central government. He also accused Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal of receiving a ‘clean chit’ in the alleged liquor scam, claiming that Punjab’s interests have been compromised for this reason.

Majithia asserted that Punjabis will not tolerate this. They have always stood up for their rights and will continue to do so. He added that this incident showcases the complete failure of both the central and state governments.

Commenting on the proposed women’s reservation bill, Majithia noted that while it appears to be a positive step, a proper evaluation should occur once the final draft is available.

“I fully support reservations. But what exactly is this proposal? What do they want to achieve? There should be discussions among all parties to incorporate meaningful and constructive suggestions,” he stated. He stressed that women are equal partners in India’s development, and any such policy must have a solid impact at the grassroots level.
