Chandigarh, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : Punjab’s Counter Intelligence unit in Amritsar has dismantled a drug smuggling operation, resulting in the arrest of four individuals. Police seized 27 kilograms of heroin, a sophisticated firearm made abroad, and three cartridges during the operation. This was revealed by DGP Gaurav Yadav on Wednesday.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Vishal Singh, also known as Shalu, Manpreet Singh, known as Sunny, Smartpreet Singh, all residents of Amritsar, and Karan Singh from Tarn Taran. In addition to the drugs and weapons, police confiscated their motorcycles and cars, which were allegedly used for trafficking.
DGP Yadav stated that preliminary investigations indicated the suspects were collaborating with a person based in Dubai and cross-border smugglers. After acquiring the drugs and illegal arms, they were set to distribute them under the guidance of their handlers.
The investigation revealed that the suspects utilized encrypted communication platforms to contact their handlers, attempting to evade police surveillance.
According to Yadav, the operation began when the Amritsar Counter Intelligence team received credible intelligence about the suspects. They had reportedly received a significant shipment of heroin and weapons dropped via drone near the India-Pakistan border in Atari, planning to deliver it to another party in Amritsar, specifically near Khalsa.
In a swift response, police teams conducted a raid and intercepted the suspects near a bus shelter in Khalsa. During the search, they recovered 27 kilograms of heroin and the firearm along with cartridges.
DGP Yadav confirmed that further investigations are underway to identify all individuals connected to the smuggling network and to uncover their relationships.
