
Patiala, May 18: The Counter Intelligence unit of Patiala has successfully dismantled a counterfeit currency module, arresting four individuals and seizing fake currency worth ₹5.50 lakh. This operation is part of an ongoing initiative to combat the circulation of counterfeit Indian currency notes (FICN) in Punjab. The information was disclosed by Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Nazar Khan from Jhuneer village in Malerkotla, Raj Mohammad from Dhuri in Sangrur, Mukhtiar Singh alias Gurjeet Singh from Jind in Haryana, and Asif Ali, also from Malerkotla.
DGP Yadav reported that the recovered counterfeit currency consists entirely of ₹500 notes. Initial investigations revealed that Raj Mohammad has a criminal background and is already facing an FIR related to the NDPS Act.
The DGP stated that further investigations are underway to uncover the connections within this network.
In detailing the operation, AIG of Counter Intelligence Patiala, Dr. Simrat Kaur, mentioned that Nazar Khan and Raj Mohammad were apprehended during the operation, leading to the recovery of ₹4 lakh in counterfeit Indian currency notes. Subsequent investigations resulted in the arrest of two additional suspects, Mukhtiar Singh and Asif Ali, who were found with another ₹1.5 lakh in fake currency.
The AIG indicated that more arrests and recoveries are expected in the coming days as the investigation continues.
An FIR numbered 159, dated May 17, 2026, has been registered at the Amargarh police station in Malerkotla under sections 179 and 180 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
