New Delhi, August 6: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has successfully secured a 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence for two drug traffickers involved in an international narcotics case in Punjab. This case emerged from the seizure of 115 grams of cocaine and other prohibited substances in 2019, as reported by an official on Thursday.
The special court in Jalandhar, Punjab, sentenced Akshinder Singh Sodhi and Amandeep Kumar to 10 years in prison along with a fine of 100,000 rupees in connection with the NDPS case.
According to the statement, this case is linked to the recovery in September 2019 by the NCB’s Chandigarh zonal unit, which included 115 grams of cocaine, 13 grams of ephedrine, 80 grams of hashish oil, and capsules containing narcotic substances.
Following thorough investigations and effective prosecution, this conviction has struck at the root of an international drug trafficking syndicate operated by a fugitive kingpin based in Canada, collaborating with local operatives in India.
The NCB stated that investigations against the absconding accused are ongoing, aiming to dismantle all modules associated with the syndicate linked to operatives in Canada and other countries.
In a separate development, the NCB conducted an awareness campaign on Thursday at the IIT Jodhpur campus, educating students about the dangers of substance abuse. An official reported that NCB officials informed students and faculty about preventive measures and suggested steps to take in situations of depression and stress, which are significant factors contributing to substance abuse.
The NCB highlighted that approximately 900 students participated in the awareness session led by the assistant director of the NCB, focusing on the hazards of substance abuse and its detrimental effects on individuals, families, and society.
