Punjab Farmers Face Devastating Crop Loss Due to Unseasonal Rain and Hail

Chandigarh, April 6: Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the President of the Punjab Congress, has urgently requested assistance from the central government following significant damage to wheat crops caused by unseasonal rain and hail in the state.

In a video shared on the social media platform X, Warring expressed his heartbreak over the government’s sluggish and insensitive response while farmers endure yet another hardship. He noted that crops nurtured over months were destroyed in just a few hours due to heavy rainfall, plunging many farmers into deep economic distress.

Warring emphasized that for countless families, these crops were their sole source of income, and now they stand helpless as those in power make grand claims but turn a blind eye to the ground realities. He urged both the central and state governments to stop making hollow promises, conduct a transparent assessment of the damages, and provide at least ₹50,000 per acre in compensation without delay. “Our farmers need action, not promises,” he stated.

Previously, Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa also called for immediate assistance from the central government regarding the severe impact of unseasonal rain and hail on wheat crops. He wrote to Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, demanding an urgent assessment, relief package, and policy support. He shared this information on the social media platform X.

In his post, Randhawa stated, “I have written to Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan requesting immediate assessment, relief package, and policy support, especially since farmers lack coverage under the PMFBY (Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana).”

Randhawa’s letter highlighted the critical situation faced by farmers across Punjab, particularly in the Gurdaspur region. He noted that from March 30-31, several districts in Punjab experienced unseasonal rain, strong winds, and hail, resulting in severe crop damage in districts such as Bathinda, Mansa, Fazilka, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Patiala, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, and Gurdaspur.
