New Delhi, July 23: The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered a suspension of mobile internet services around Jantar Mantar for eight hours, starting from 4 PM on Thursday. This decision was made to maintain law and order, according to an official statement.
The ministry stated that the Secretary is convinced that such measures are necessary to uphold public order and prevent incitement to criminal activities.
In an order issued by Mahendra Vikram Singh, it was directed that mobile internet services (across all technologies) be suspended within a 1.5-kilometer radius of Jantar Mantar from 4 PM to midnight on July 23.
This order was issued under the powers granted by Section 20(2)(b) of the Telecommunications Act, 2023, and Rule 2(1)(b) and Rule 3(1) of the Telecommunications (Temporary Suspension of Services) Rules, 2024.
Earlier, Minister of State in the PMO, Jitendra Singh, mentioned that the government had made four formal proposals for dialogue with the Cockroach Public Party (CJP) in the past 24 hours. However, there has been no response or engagement from their side regarding the government’s initiative.
The central minister noted that the government has reached out to the protesting students at Jantar Mantar with utmost humility, emphasizing that dialogue is the only constructive way to resolve the deadlock.
He stated, “We are waiting for them. Our doors are always open. We have contacted them at least four times in the last 24 hours. We want them to engage in discussions on all issues, including NEET.”
The minister urged students to come forward for talks, assuring them that the government is willing to resolve the matter through dialogue. He mentioned that central minister JP Nadda would listen to their concerns and address their issues. Additionally, students can decide the time and topics for the discussions.
He added that the talks could take place at JP Nadda’s office or residence at any convenient time, and he would also participate in the discussions. The minister emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is sensitive to their issues. He announced the establishment of fast-track courts to ensure swift justice against those responsible for the paper leak.
Reiterating PM Modi’s concern for India’s youth and their future, he stated that fast-track courts would ensure that offenders face the law and receive punishment for their actions, along with timely justice.
Students, led by the CJP, have been protesting for over a month at Jantar Mantar regarding the NEET paper leak, while social activist Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike entered its 26th day on Thursday.
