Chandigarh, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : Under the leadership of Sachin Pilot, the newly appointed general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and Punjab in-charge, Congress officials set aside their differences to march towards the residence of Finance Minister Harpal Cheema in Chandigarh on September 15. The protest was fueled by allegations that Cheema incited the suicide of Dalit activist Gulzar Singh, prompting calls for his resignation.
Despite the large turnout of thousands of party workers, a heavy police presence prevented the demonstrators from reaching Cheema’s home. Authorities deployed water cannons to disperse the crowd, resulting in injuries among several party members, including senior leader Kuljeet Nagra.
During the protest, Pilot emphasized that the opposition to Cheema was not personal. He questioned the legal obligation to file a First Information Report (FIR) when a person names a minister in their dying declaration, calling for a thorough investigation into the matter.
Pilot highlighted that Gulzar Singh’s suicide reflects the troubling realities in Punjab, contradicting claims made by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He lamented that a poor Dalit felt compelled to take his own life after raising concerns about the easy availability of drugs that had affected his son.
He reminded the AAP of their promise to appoint a Dalit deputy chief minister, pointing out that instead of support, individuals like Gulzar Singh are driven to despair under their governance. Pilot also referenced AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal’s pre-election vow to eradicate drugs within three months of taking office, criticizing the current situation where drugs are reportedly delivered to homes.
Expressing gratitude for the solidarity shown by party workers, Pilot assured them that Congress would stand by their side in the fight for justice. He pledged that the party would spare no effort to restore the dignity and honor of every Congress member.
