Pune, October 1 (Daily Kiran) : A recovery officer in Pune, Surendra Chandrakant Gholap, has been granted bail after being accused of embezzling ₹5,69,508 from women’s savings groups. The funds were collected from 66 women as loan installments but were never deposited in the organization’s account.
The complaint was filed by Somnath Bhondwe, manager of the Bhigwan branch of C Commerce Market Services Private Limited, leading to an investigation by the Bhigwan police. Gholap was appointed as a recovery officer on May 14, 2025. His responsibilities included collecting the principal and interest from female borrowers and ensuring the money was deposited with the organization.
According to allegations, between May 14 and October 30, 2025, Gholap collected a total of ₹5,69,508 in cash and online payments from the women, but failed to submit this amount to the institution. He was arrested on June 18, 2026.
During the bail hearing, Gholap’s defense argued that the investigation was complete and the chargesheet had been filed. They also pointed out an eight-month delay in filing the First Information Report (FIR).
The Indapur court noted that there was no recovery of funds from Gholap, and with 68 witnesses involved in the case, it could take considerable time to conclude the trial. The charges against him fall under Section 316(4) of the Indian Penal Code, which carries a potential sentence of up to seven years.
On September 29, 2026, the court approved Gholap’s bail, setting conditions that included a ₹50,000 personal recognizance bond and the requirement of a surety. He was also instructed not to tamper with evidence or intimidate witnesses and to appear regularly in court on scheduled hearing dates.
