Patna, March 18: A significant protest took place in Patna on Wednesday under the banner of the All India Equity Forum for Equity. Participants, including students, youth, social and political activists, gathered to demand issues related to the University Grants Commission (UGC) and equal opportunities in higher education.
The march commenced from Gate Number 10 of Gandhi Maidan, breaking through barricades at JP Golambar, and reached the Dak Bungalow intersection. There, clashes occurred between some protesters and police, leading to a few arrests, although all were later released. The protest transformed into a gathering at Dak Bungalow intersection.
Demonstrators emphasized the need for implementing UGC regulations to combat rising social inequality, caste discrimination, and oppression in education. They called for the repeal of the New Education Policy 2020 and an increase in reservation limits for marginalized groups, insisting on strict enforcement.
Sudhir Kumar, the state president of the All India Students Federation (AISF), highlighted ongoing discrimination against Dalit, tribal, and backward class students in universities. He noted that various reports and judicial actions have raised this issue, yet the government has failed to take effective measures.
The forum’s state coordinator, Rinku Yadav, led the assembly. Rajaram Singh, a member of parliament from Karakat, assured attendees that their voices would be strongly represented in parliament. He stated that the ongoing fight for social justice would reach a decisive conclusion.
Speakers asserted that ensuring equal opportunities in education is fundamental to a democratic system, and the student-youth movement would continue. Former legislator Amarjeet Kushwaha and legislator Sandeep Saurabh also addressed the gathering.
