Princess Padmaja Kumari Parmar Advocates to End Diabetes Stigma

Jaipur, March 28: In a world where royal families are often associated with privilege, the story of Princess Padmaja Kumari Parmar of the Mewar dynasty stands apart. Her narrative is filled with discipline, resilience, and determination.

At the age of five, she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, a condition she struggled to understand. What began as a journey filled with fear and confusion soon transformed into a lifelong lesson in courage.

Recalling her experience, Padmaja shared, “When I was diagnosed with diabetes, there was an atmosphere of fear and confusion around me. However, my mother never allowed me to feel weak. She taught me that insulin is not a burden; it is my strength, my life.”

During a time when superstitions and home remedies were widely suggested, her mother ensured strict adherence to insulin, explaining that Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that cannot be ignored.

Padmaja noted that this clarity shaped the course of her life. From a young age, she pondered, “What about those who do not have access to insulin?” Today, this question drives her work.

Speaking at a global summit in Jaipur aimed at eradicating diabetes stigma, she called for a shift in perspective. “Forty years later, we deserve to be free from stigma. Anything less is unacceptable,” she asserted.

She credited her upbringing for her tenacity. Remembering her late father, Arvind Singh Mewar, she acknowledged her parents for shaping her outlook. “My struggle began in childhood, but my parents taught me to face it with courage and wisdom, not fear.”

Padmaja’s campaign extends beyond mere words. She recently met with Rajasthan’s Health Minister, advocating for the availability of insulin at every district health center. This initiative has led to commitments to enhance grassroots access and awareness.

“There was no politics behind this; only purpose, and that is why the request was accepted,” she stated.

Sunil Kumar, the nodal officer of the Rajasthan government’s health department, praised Padmaja’s ongoing efforts, highlighting her consistent contribution to raising diabetes awareness across the state. “Her continuous support in public health awareness initiatives is commendable and truly impactful.”
