Prime Minister Modi Congratulates C. Joseph Vijay on Becoming Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu

New Delhi, May 10: Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay took the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Vijay on this significant achievement.

According to sources, PM Modi and Chief Minister Vijay spoke over the phone on Sunday. The Prime Minister expressed his best wishes to Vijay following his swearing-in ceremony.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi posted on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Congratulations to C. Joseph Vijay on taking the oath as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Wishing him all the best for his upcoming term. The central government will continue to work alongside the Tamil Nadu government to improve the lives of the people.”

In response to PM Modi’s wishes, CM Vijay expressed his gratitude. He posted on ‘X’, saying, “I sincerely thank Prime Minister Modi for his good wishes as I assume office as Chief Minister. Our sole aim is the welfare and progress of our people. We hope for the active cooperation and support of the central government for the continuous development of Tamil Nadu.”

It is noteworthy that C. Joseph Vijay, leader of the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), took the oath of office as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath. With Vijay’s swearing-in, the dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) spanning nearly six decades has come to an end.

The grand ceremony took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, where Vijay, along with N. Anand, Adhav Arjun, K.G. Arun Raj, K.A. Sengottaiyan, P. Venkateramanan, R. Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, Dr. T.K. Prabhu, and Selvi S. Keertana, took their oaths as ministers.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several national and regional leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, along with film personalities, party workers, and thousands of supporters. The event was held under heavy security. Seats were reserved in the front row for Vijay’s parents, renowned filmmaker S.A. Chandrasekhar and Shobha Chandrasekhar. Actress Trisha Krishnan and her mother were also given seats in the same row.

After securing the support of 120 legislators in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, the TVK led coalition presented its claim to the Governor. The TVK emerged as the largest party in the recent assembly elections, although it fell short of a majority. The Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), and Communist Party of India-Marxist extended their support to form the government.

Vijay’s swearing-in marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s politics, as it is the first time since 1967 that a non-Dravidian party has come to power in the state.
