New Delhi, August 15: President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the vital role of athletes in India’s nation-building process during her address on the eve of India’s 80th Independence Day. She stated that every citizen fulfilling their duty contributes to the nation’s progress.
In her speech, President Murmu acknowledged the contributions of students, teachers, scientists, engineers, doctors, farmers, laborers, artisans, artists, and professionals from various fields, alongside athletes. She remarked that Independence Day should serve as a moment to reflect on the journey India has taken since gaining freedom in 1947 and to reaffirm the associated responsibilities.
“On the eve of Independence Day, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all of you for this national festival. In just a few hours, our country will witness the auspicious beginning of its 80th year of independence. Indians residing both at home and abroad celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm. Our tricolor is a symbol of our freedom, and we hoist it with immense pride,” she said.
Reflecting on August 15, 1947, Murmu noted that independence entrusted the responsibility of shaping the country’s future to its people, emphasizing that the true significance of freedom goes beyond liberation from foreign rule. She added, “On August 15, 1947, Mother India was freed from the shackles of slavery. Every citizen became a creator of independent India’s destiny. The real meaning of freedom is to ensure that all citizens can seize opportunities to fulfill their aspirations and work towards making India a leading nation.”
President Murmu stated that India’s progress is driven by millions of citizens working across various sectors, including athletes whose efforts and achievements contribute to national development and pride. She also praised students, teachers, scientists, engineers, doctors, healthcare professionals, workers from all sectors, and farmers.
She highlighted that the dedication of these individuals is crucial in the ongoing process of nation-building. Murmu acknowledged artisans, artists, intellectuals, employees from both private and public sectors, elected representatives, and members of the judiciary. She expressed respect for the members of India’s security forces, commending those serving in the armed forces, paramilitary, and police organizations for ensuring the nation’s defense and security.
“Many citizens are engaged in various tasks, and every citizen who sincerely adheres to the fundamental duties outlined in our Constitution is an active participant in our nation-building process. I sincerely commend all of them,” she stated.
The President also recognized Indians living abroad and officials working in India’s diplomatic missions worldwide, noting that their contributions enhance India’s standing and reputation on the international stage.
