Agartala, April 26: Pradeep Chakraborty, who received recognition for bamboo products during the recent episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for mentioning his small industry.
In an interview with a news agency, Chakraborty stated, “I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for acknowledging my work in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ program.”
During the program, PM Modi highlighted the benefits of changes in bamboo-related regulations, noting that the central government removed bamboo from the category of trees in 2017. He emphasized that the results of this decision are now evident across the country.
Chakraborty mentioned that the bamboo industry is rapidly expanding in the Northeast. PM Modi specifically referenced Chakraborty from South Tripura and Bijoy Sutradhaar from Gomati district, stating that they viewed the new laws as significant opportunities. They have integrated technology into their work, allowing them to produce bamboo products more efficiently than ever before.
Chakraborty revealed that they established their center in 2008, with support from the Tripura Bamboo Mission, which provided machinery. Currently, they manufacture around 150 bamboo products, including bags, jewelry boxes, and other items. Approximately 12 women are employed at this center.
He added that the center is currently profitable, with women earning between 6,000 to 6,500 rupees based on their work.
PM Modi further mentioned that in Dimapur, Nagaland, and surrounding areas, several self-help groups have added value to bamboo food products. He also noted teams like ‘Khorolo Creative Craft’ that are working on furniture and handicrafts.
