
Mexico City, 3 January 2026. A strong earthquake shook southern Mexico on the very second day of the new year. Local authorities reported a 6.5 magnitude tremor in southern Mexico, resulting in two fatalities and twelve injuries.
State Governor Evelyn Salgado stated that the epicentre of Friday’s earthquake was Guerrero. In Guerrero state, a house collapsed due to the quake’s impact, causing the death of a 50-year-old woman.
News agency Xinhua, quoting an official from the municipality, reported that during rescue operations in Benito Juarez municipality, a 60-year-old man fell after tripping and later died.
Clara Brugada, head of the Mexico City government, posted on social media platform X that after activating the earthquake response protocol, twelve people were reported injured. Additionally, power supply disruptions were reported in various areas, with 18 complaints lodged.
She added that checks are ongoing for two buildings at risk of collapse. As a precaution, thirty-four buildings and five houses are being inspected. President Claudia Sheinbaum had to evacuate the presidential building during the usual morning press conference.
Mexico’s National Seismological Service stated the earthquake occurred at 7:58 am local time, centred about 4 kilometres southwest of San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero. The quake’s depth was approximately 5 kilometres.
In Mexico City, loudspeakers on streets issued seismic alerts several seconds before the tremors were felt. The earthquake’s shocks were also experienced in the states of Sonora, Baja California, and Oaxaca, ranging from moderate to strong intensity.
