Kolkata, April 9: Anant Deb Adhikari, the BJP candidate from the Jalpaiguri Sadar assembly constituency, filed a complaint against Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday.
Adhikari alleges that Banerjee made derogatory remarks about him during a campaign rally in Jalpaiguri. Accompanied by his lawyers, he lodged the complaint at the Kotwali police station, claiming that these statements have harmed his reputation and misled voters.
The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday when Banerjee addressed a rally in support of the party’s candidate, Krishan Das, for the Jalpaiguri Sadar seat.
While speaking at the event, Banerjee targeted the BJP candidate, making personal comments. He stated, “The BJP candidate from Jalpaiguri Sadar is not in a good mood all day. He has a drinking problem and behaves poorly with women.”
In response to these remarks, the BJP organized a protest march in Jalpaiguri city on Tuesday night. Anant Deb Adhikari warned that if Banerjee does not apologize, he will pursue legal action against him. Following this, he filed the complaint.
Adhikari mentioned, “I completed my LLB from Jalpaiguri Law College in 2002 and joined the Jalpaiguri Bar Association in 2003. I am a member of the Rajbanshi community and advocate on behalf of that community. Banerjee deliberately made personal attacks against me while supporting Trinamool candidate Krishan Das, attempting to tarnish my image with false allegations, which is why I filed the complaint.”
A member of the BJP’s legal cell, Soujit Singh, stated that Banerjee violated the election code of conduct during the campaign. He also noted that a complaint regarding this matter has been filed with the Election Commission.
