Bengaluru, May 12: H.D. Kumaraswamy, the Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, alleged on Tuesday that a power struggle exists between Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar regarding the conduct of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) elections.
Speaking to the media in Bengaluru, Kumaraswamy commented on reports of the state government’s attempts to postpone the GBA elections. He claimed that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah convened a meeting of election officials in the absence of Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar and insisted on holding the elections.
Kumaraswamy further alleged that Shivakumar later called another meeting, reportedly pressuring the Chief Minister to avoid holding elections under any circumstances. The state government has now approached the Supreme Court to postpone the elections.
He accused the state government of using excuses, such as the ongoing census, to delay the elections until September. Kumaraswamy asserted that the Chief Minister wanted to conduct elections to strengthen his political position over the next six months, while Shivakumar feared that holding elections could weaken his own chances of securing the Chief Minister’s position.
Kumaraswamy claimed that one faction desires elections to protect the Chief Minister’s chair, while the other aims to delay them to eventually seize the Chief Minister’s position. There is a clear conflict between the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister regarding the elections.
Notably, Karnataka’s Home Minister G. Parameshwara stated that the state government is eager to conduct elections as soon as possible, but procedural issues must be resolved first. He added that they also want to hold elections promptly, but any errors in the process need to be corrected. Given that the census is ongoing, adequate manpower arrangements are also necessary. Conducting elections is their responsibility, and they will fulfill it.
The Karnataka State Election Commission (SEC) filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Monday, seeking a 90-day extension for the long-pending Bengaluru Municipal Corporation elections.
