New Delhi, June 28, 2025 — In a major step toward digital inclusion, the Indian Post Office network is set to roll out UPI-based payment systems across more than 1.5 lakh branches nationwide. Starting August 2025, customers will be able to make payments for various postal services directly via QR code scan—eliminating the need for physical cash or cheques.
This move is part of India Post’s broader initiative to modernize its services through the “IT 2.0 upgrade”, aimed at making postal counters function more like modern banking outlets.
No More Long Queues or Cash Hassles
Traditionally, people visited post offices to withdraw money, send letters and parcels, or deposit funds using cash and cheques. With the digital upgrade, every post office counter will be equipped with a lightweight app that generates a QR code for each transaction. Customers can simply scan the code using their UPI-enabled apps, confirm payment, and instantly receive a printed receipt. A digital record of each transaction will also be saved automatically.
Pilot Test in Karnataka Yields Success
Before the national rollout, the system was successfully tested at head post offices in Mysuru and Bagalkot in Karnataka. Users were able to book money orders, deposit funds into savings accounts, and pay parcel charges seamlessly via UPI. Encouraged by this success, India Post is now gearing up to implement the system across the country in a phased manner.
Phase-Wise Rollout Plan
India Post has announced a three-stage implementation:
August 2025 (Week 1): Launch in large-capacity post offices and urban campuses.
Mid-August to September 2025: Rollout to semi-urban and middle-income area counters.
October 2025 onwards: Deployment in remote and rural post offices.
To ensure smooth adoption, one to two staff members per branch will receive training in QR code scanning and digital payment processing.
Key Benefits of the Digital Post Office System
Faster Service: No need to carry or count cash; transactions become instant.
Error-Free Transactions: Avoids issues like cheque bounce or data mismatch.
Digital Recordkeeping: All payments are stored electronically for easy access and audit.
User-Friendly for All: Particularly beneficial for the elderly, pensioners, students, and small business owners.
This upgrade positions the Indian postal network as a digitally empowered financial services provider, bridging the urban-rural divide and aligning with the government’s vision of a “Digital India.”
