Moscow, April 5: Amid rising threats to Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, Russia has accelerated the evacuation of its personnel and condemned the recent attack on the facility. The Russian state nuclear corporation, Rosatom, has warned that the situation is increasing the risk of a nuclear accident.
According to Russian news agencies, Rosatom safely relocated an additional 198 employees from the plant on Saturday. This evacuation process has been ongoing since the outbreak of war in Iran at the end of February.
Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that a member of the plant’s security staff was killed by projectile debris, and a building sustained damage from shockwaves and debris.
Rosatom chief Alexey Likhachev stated that conditions around the plant are deteriorating rapidly. He also confirmed that the deceased employee was an Iranian citizen.
In a related statement, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova condemned the attack on the Bushehr plant as a “malicious act,” emphasizing the loss of life and property. She urged an immediate halt to attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, particularly the Bushehr plant, and called on the international community to take action.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that attacks near the plant by the U.S. and Israel pose risks not only to Iran but to the entire Gulf region.
Notably, neither the U.S. nor Israeli military has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Experts believe that significant damage to the nuclear plant could have far-reaching environmental and humanitarian consequences, potentially increasing regional instability.
