Pope Leo Calls for Ceasefire Amid Rising Violence in the Middle East

Vatican City, March 22: Pope Leo has expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence and warfare in the Middle East, labeling it “a stain on all humanity.” He has urgently called for a ceasefire.

During his weekly Angelus prayer at St. Peter’s Square, the Pope reflected on the situation in the Middle East and other conflict-ridden areas worldwide, describing it with “sorrow and despair.” He stated, “We cannot remain silent in the face of so much suffering, especially for those helpless individuals who are victims of these conflicts. Their pain is the pain of all humanity.”

Pope Leo emphasized that the world should not limit itself to mere expressions of concern but must take concrete steps toward peace. He urged people to continue praying, suggesting that such efforts could pave the way for an end to the conflict and the establishment of lasting peace.

His statement comes at a time when tensions and violence in the Middle East are escalating. The conflict, which began on February 28, has reached a dangerous level on its 23rd day. An attack occurred on Iran’s Natanz nuclear plant on Saturday, marking the second strike since fighting erupted in the facility. The Iranian Nuclear Energy Agency reported to the IAEA that fortunately, there was no radioactive leak.

On the same night, Iran targeted two Israeli cities, one of which, Dimona, is known as Israel’s nuclear center. The targeting of nuclear facilities from both sides has raised concerns at the WHO. Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that this situation has brought the Middle Eastern conflict to a perilous turning point.
