New Delhi, March 14: A political storm erupted following Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s comments about Kanshi Ram, the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The remarks, made during an event in Lucknow commemorating Kanshi Ram’s birth anniversary, sparked intense reactions from leaders of the Samajwadi Party (SP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress.
Rahul Gandhi stated that if India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, were alive today, Kanshi Ram would be the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. This assertion ignited a fierce debate among political factions.
In response, SP MP Virendra Singh emphasized that Kanshi Ram’s contributions should not be viewed through the lens of any single political party. He remarked that attempts to divide Kanshi Ram’s legacy along party lines are misguided. Kanshi Ram empowered marginalized communities and inspired them to fight for their constitutional rights. He showed society a path toward equality, which is why the underprivileged regard him as a guiding figure. His legacy cannot be forgotten.
SP spokesperson Ashutosh Verma added that regional parties like the BSP and SP emerged due to the political circumstances during Congress rule. He suggested that if Congress leaders understood the conditions that led to the formation of these parties, they would find answers to their questions. He pointed out that it was the Congress’s flawed policies that allowed leaders like Kanshi Ram and Mulayam Singh Yadav to rise as voices for the marginalized.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders criticized Rahul Gandhi’s statements. BJP MLA Raj Sinha remarked that there is no need to pay much attention to what Rahul Gandhi says, sarcastically adding, “If he were around, this would happen. These are just meaningless statements. Such thoughts can only come from Rahul Gandhi.”
In contrast, Congress defended Rahul Gandhi’s remarks. Party spokesperson Surendra Rajput stated that Gandhi acknowledged Kanshi Ram’s stature and significance. He noted, “Rahul Gandhi clearly stated that if Kanshi Ram had lived during Nehru’s time, he would have been a Chief Minister of a state.”
Rajput also took aim at BSP chief Mayawati, responding to her post on social media. He said, “Mayawati is troubled because the Bahujan mission is not ensnared in her web. Those who sold the Bahujan mission should refrain from advising Congress, especially the wisdom they glean from their association with the BJP and the ‘WhatsApp University.’”
