New Delhi, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : Political tensions are escalating in Punjab as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress engage in a heated exchange regarding drug-related issues. Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal responded on social media to comments made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi about the drug crisis in Punjab. Kejriwal defended the Punjab government, accusing Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of exacerbating the problem.
Kejriwal stated that the Punjab government is waging a decisive battle against drug abuse. He challenged Gandhi by asking who was responsible for bringing drugs into Punjab. According to Kejriwal, the drug problem has worsened during the tenures of Congress, Akali Dal, and BJP governments, while the AAP government is actively working to address the issue. He claimed that for the first time, a state government in India is conducting such a comprehensive campaign against drugs.
He emphasized that the Punjab government is attempting to dismantle the drug networks established by previous administrations. Kejriwal also accused Gandhi of politicizing a recent death linked to drug abuse. He expressed disappointment that a leader of Gandhi’s stature would use such a tragedy for political gain. Notably, he mentioned that when Gandhi’s party member visited the village where the death occurred, locals reportedly asked him to leave.
Kejriwal urged Gandhi to visit the village and understand the situation firsthand. He asserted that no member of the Punjab government was involved in the death. He called on Gandhi to focus on facts rather than engage in political maneuvering.
Meanwhile, AAP leader Manish Sisodia also launched a sharp attack on Gandhi. He criticized Gandhi for allegedly spreading misinformation regarding the death of a poor Dalit laborer. Sisodia pointed out that the deceased’s son clearly stated on camera that no pressure was exerted by any minister. He accused Gandhi of attacking the Punjab government based solely on a video without considering the facts or listening to the deceased’s family.
Sisodia condemned the politicization of the struggle against drugs, asserting that even the death of a laborer has become a political issue. He demanded an apology from Gandhi to the deceased’s son for the misleading statements.
Tensions continue to mount as both parties navigate this sensitive issue in Punjab.
