Political Dynasties Dominate Jharkhand Municipal Elections

Ranchi, February 8: The municipal elections in 48 local bodies across Jharkhand are witnessing a surge of political dynasties. Family members of influential leaders from major parties are stepping into the electoral arena. Husbands, wives, sons, daughters, daughters-in-law, and brothers of prominent politicians are knocking on the doors of power in these municipalities.

Voting for these local bodies is scheduled for February 23, and political activity has intensified across the state. The mayoral seat in Dhanbad is generating the most discussion. Here, Sanjeev Singh, husband of BJP MLA Ragini Singh, has entered the fray. His candidacy against the BJP-supported candidate has made the competition particularly intriguing. The elections in the Chas municipal corporation are also testing political legacies.

Parinda Singh, the daughter-in-law of the late former minister Samresh Singh, is contesting. She faces strong contenders such as BJP leader Ritu Rani Singh, Arvind Rai, former Congress district president Umesh Gupta, and Mohammad Sultan. The contest in Chas is becoming increasingly multifaceted.

In the Mango municipal corporation, the politics of relationships is prominently displayed. Sudha Gupta, wife of former minister Banna Gupta, is running as a Congress-supported candidate, while Kumkum Srivastava, wife of former BJP city president Rajkumar Srivastava, is also in the race. This contest is seen as a direct battle between two political families.

For the Chakradharpur municipal council president position, Uday Manjhi, son of MP Joba Manjhi, is contesting. Additionally, Vijay Gagarai, brother of MLA Dashrath Gagarai, is also in the running. In the Jamtara municipal council, Chameli Devi, wife of the late former MLA Vishnu Bhaiya, is a candidate for the president position.

The influence of political legacies is evident in the Medininagar municipal corporation as well. Namrata Tripathi, daughter of former minister and prominent Congress leader K.N. Tripathi, is contesting for the mayoral position with the support of Congress.

In Ranchi, Somvit Manjhi, son of Rajya Sabha MP Mahua Manjhi, is running for ward councilor, eyeing the deputy mayor position, which will be indirectly elected after the councilor elections. Similarly, in Hazaribagh, Vikas Yadav, brother of BJP MLA Manoj Yadav from Barhi, has been elected unopposed as a ward councilor and is also looking towards the upcoming indirect deputy mayor election.

Clearly, the Jharkhand municipal elections this time will be remembered not only for local issues but also for the impact of political legacies and familial ties.
