Mumbai, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Arvind Sawant, a Shiv Sena (UBT) MP, has urged caution against jumping to conclusions regarding the recent suicide of an IIT Bombay student. He emphasized that it is essential to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy before assigning blame. Sawant described the incident as deeply unfortunate and called for a thorough inquiry, suggesting that either the CBI or an SIT should conduct the investigation to ensure that all facts are considered.
In response to the controversy surrounding Rahul Gandhi‘s mimicry of the Prime Minister during the “Students’ Echo” program, Sawant stated that Gandhi was not responsible for the mimicry and defended it as a form of artistic expression. He argued that political satire serves as an opportunity for society to engage in self-reflection. Citing examples from past leaders like Raj Thackeray and Balasaheb Thackeray, he noted that mimicry and satire of politicians have long been a part of political discourse.
Sawant also took a jab at the BJP, recalling previous instances where opposition leaders were mocked, including derogatory terms like “Pappu” and “Didi O Didi.” He contended that rather than being offended by mimicry, one should appreciate the underlying political messages.
Addressing inquiries about the Disha Salian case, Sawant accused critics of raising old issues at a time when the government faces scrutiny over unemployment, farmer suicides, and paper leak scandals. He asserted that if someone has made allegations of intimidation, the named individuals should be questioned, and due process must be followed.
The MP criticized the Election Commission, alleging it operates in favor of the ruling party. He pointed to significant arguments presented by senior lawyer Kapil Sibal regarding disputes over election symbols and names associated with his party, expressing hope for justice from the Supreme Court.
On West Bengal politics, Sawant expressed support for Mamata Banerjee, calling her a courageous leader. He questioned whether the political tactics employed by the BJP in the state can truly be considered democratic.
When asked about the burqa ban in Italy, Sawant stated that different countries make decisions based on their circumstances and cautioned against creating societal disputes in India over such issues. He highlighted the country’s diverse religious and cultural fabric as a strength.
Sawant also objected to comments made by a BJP legislator regarding Muslim participation in Garba festivities, questioning who has the authority to dictate such terms. He called for the Supreme Court to take note of such remarks and demanded legal action against those imposing restrictions in the name of religion.
Finally, on the topic of language, Sawant expressed pride in his mother tongue while emphasizing the importance of respecting all languages. He condemned any rhetoric that fosters hatred based on language or religion, advocating for unity in diversity.
