Gonda, August 27: A joint team of police and the Special Operations Group (SOG) in Gonda district, Uttar Pradesh, apprehended a notorious criminal following a gunfight on Wednesday night. The arrested individual was found in possession of stolen jewelry, ₹17,100 in cash, a 12-bore firearm, cartridges, and an unregistered motorcycle.
Ajit Kumar Rajak, the Additional Superintendent of Police in Gonda, reported that the suspect sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg during the police’s counteraction. He was initially taken to the community health center in Chhapaiya for treatment, where doctors later referred him to the district hospital for advanced care.
The incident occurred around 8 PM on August 26, when the police and SOG team were conducting checks near Birhipur Bagh. Upon noticing the police, the suspect, riding an unregistered motorcycle, attempted to flee. When the police tried to stop him, he opened fire. In the ensuing exchange, the suspect, identified as Tilak Ram, alias Jhinku, was shot in the right leg, leading to his capture. During interrogation, he confessed to being involved in several robbery and theft incidents across the Chhapaiya, Khodare, Kotwali Dehat, and Parsapur police jurisdictions.
Authorities stated that the arrest has unveiled two significant robbery cases that occurred on the nights of May 25 and June 28, where intruders assaulted residents in their homes. Police records indicate that Tilak Ram has over 25 cases registered against him in Gonda and Basti districts, including theft, robbery, and violations of the Gangster Act.
Ajit Kumar Rajak confirmed that the suspect was injured during the arrest and was provided immediate medical assistance before being referred to the district hospital. A case has been registered against the arrested individual under Section 109(1) of the BNS and the Arms Act at the Chhapaiya police station. Investigations are ongoing, and police are working to recover additional stolen items related to other incidents.
