(Kiran News) Just imagine getting relief from hefty electricity bills forever. The central government’s PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme is making this possible for lakhs of families across the country. Under this scheme, there is no need to wait for a special government subsidy or company discount. Just install a solar panel once and forget about your electricity bill.

16.78 Lakh Families Benefiting So Far
So far, solar panels have been installed at the homes of 16.78 lakh people under the PMSGMBY Scheme. Not only are these families saving on their electricity bills, but they are also receiving direct subsidy from the government. The central government has already given Rs 9,000 crore under the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme.
Scheme Details and Objectives
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has been implementing the PM Suryaghar – Free Electricity Scheme nationwide since February 2024. Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, stated in the Rajya Sabha that by 5 August 2025, 16.78 lakh families have already benefited from rooftop solar power plants. A total amount of Rs 9,280.88 crore has been distributed to beneficiaries as Central Financial Assistance (CFA).

Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, the central government offers a maximum subsidy of Rs 78,000 for a 3 kW solar panel. The breakdown is as follows:

In Bihar, BPL families are receiving solar panels for free. In Chhattisgarh, the combined subsidy from the centre and state goes up to Rs 1.07 lakh. Many other states also have their own discount schemes.
