PM-Setu Initiative to Boost Employment for Bengal Youth with Significant Investment

Kolkata, June 12: West Bengal Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay has hailed the Prime Minister’s Skilling and Employability Transformation (PM-Setu) initiative as a crucial step for youth employment and skill development in the state.

He stated that the primary aim of this program is to modernize Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), train youth according to industry needs, and provide better job opportunities.

Minister Chattopadhyay mentioned that Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced an ambitious project worth ₹60,000 crores in the 2024-25 Union Budget for the development and enhancement of thousands of ITIs across the country. This initiative has been named the PM-Setu.

He alleged that the state government did not take any concrete steps regarding the project earlier due to the inclusion of the term “Prime Minister” in its name.

He added that after the formation of the BJP government in the state, a decision was made to implement and engage with this initiative. According to him, the PM-Setu program will work towards providing skill development training to youth by establishing coordination between the central government, state government, and industrial organizations, as well as ensuring employment post-training.

Chattopadhyay indicated that over the next five years, approximately ₹5,000 to ₹6,000 crores will be invested in West Bengal under this initiative. This investment will facilitate the development of modern technology, advanced training facilities, and industry-based curricula in ITIs. Consequently, thousands of youth in the state will gain access to employment-oriented education and skill training, significantly enhancing their employability.
