PM Modi Urges Youth to Embrace Voting as a Vital Duty on National Voter Day

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings to the nation on the occasion of National Voter Day, emphasising that being a voter is not only a constitutional right but also a significant duty. He highlighted that every citizen’s vote shapes the future of India and urged the youth to actively participate in the democratic process.

In a message shared on social media platform X, the Prime Minister stated, “National Voter Day is a moment to deepen our faith in India’s democratic values. I commend the Election Commission of India and all those associated with it for their efforts to strengthen our democratic processes. Voting is not just a right; it is a vital duty that empowers citizens to shape the destiny of India.” He encouraged citizens to honour democracy by consistently exercising their voting rights, which lays the foundation for a developed India.

Celebrating First-Time Voters

PM Modi also addressed the volunteers of the ‘My India’ initiative through a letter, urging them to celebrate the milestone when a young person around them registers as a first-time voter. He wrote, “Connecting with you as a citizen fills me with pride. India, known as the world’s largest democracy, has a rich history of democratic values dating back centuries. Democracy, debate, and dialogue are ingrained in our culture.”

The Prime Minister recalled the first general elections held in 1951-52, marking 75 years of electoral democracy this year. He emphasised that voting is both a privilege and a responsibility, symbolising citizens’ participation in shaping the nation’s future. The indelible ink on voters’ fingers signifies the vibrancy and importance of Indian democracy.

He urged everyone to celebrate this important moment for first-time voters by sharing sweets at home or within their communities. Schools and colleges were encouraged to play a nurturing role by organising ceremonies to honour new voters and ensuring every eligible young person is registered. PM Modi highlighted January 25 as a fitting occasion to promote such activities.

Election Commission and Inclusive Democracy

Praising the Election Commission, the Prime Minister noted that conducting elections on such a large scale is a remarkable achievement in election management. He described the election process as a grand celebration of democracy, with voters from all corners of the country—from the Himalayas to the Andaman Islands, deserts to dense forests—committed to making their voices heard.

PM Modi also acknowledged the vital role of women, especially young women, in strengthening India’s democracy through their awareness and active participation. He called on the youth to engage with platforms like ‘My Young India’ or ‘My India’ to demonstrate their commitment to the nation’s progress.

He concluded with an appeal for collective resolve: “Let us pledge to leave no stone unturned in strengthening our democracy. This will help realise the dream of a developed, inclusive, and self-reliant India.”
