Rohit Shetty: The Journey of the Action King Inspired by His Father

Mumbai, March 14: Rohit Shetty, known as the “Action King” of the film industry, has given us blockbuster hits like “Golmaal,” “Singham,” and “Chennai Express.” His films are synonymous with high-octane action, thrilling sequences, and flying cars. However, few know that his father was the driving force behind his passion for action films.

Rohit’s father, M.B. Shetty, was a renowned stuntman whose life was filled with challenges and injuries. Witnessing his father’s struggles and the bloodshed he endured inspired Rohit to create action-packed films that thrill audiences. Today, his movies gross millions and set new standards for action cinema.

Born on March 14, M.B. Shetty was a famous stuntman, action choreographer, and villain during the 1970s and 80s. His mother, Ratna Shetty, also contributed to the film industry as a junior artist and stuntwoman, doubling for actresses like Hema Malini in “Seeta Aur Geeta.” Rohit was only 7-8 years old when his father passed away in 1982, plunging the family into financial turmoil. His mother fought hard to support the family and guided Rohit towards a career in film.

At the age of 17, Rohit began his career in 1991 with “Phool Aur Kaante,” working as an assistant director to Kuku Kohli. This film marked the debut of Ajay Devgn, leading to a lasting friendship that would fuel many successful collaborations. In his early days, Rohit faced numerous challenges, from pressing Tabu’s sarees in “Haqeeqat” to being a spot boy for Kajol and a stunt double for Akshay Kumar in “Suhaag.” He often walked miles to reach sets, sometimes going hungry, as he recounted in interviews.

In 2003, at the age of 30, Rohit directed his first film, “Zameen,” which unfortunately did not succeed. This setback made it difficult for him to find work, but he persevered. The turning point came in 2006 with “Golmaal,” which became a massive hit in the comedy genre. The “Golmaal” series remains one of the most popular franchises today. In 2011, “Singham” solidified Rohit’s status as the king of action, followed by hits like “Chennai Express,” “Singham Returns,” “Simmba,” “Sooryavanshi,” and “Singham Again.”

Rohit Shetty’s films are a brilliant blend of action, comedy, and emotion. Beyond filmmaking, he has also hosted the stunt-based show “Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi” and served as a judge on “Comedy Circus.”
