Prabhas Patan: The Somnath temple in Gujarat will host a series of spiritual and social programmes from January 8 to 11 to celebrate the Somnath Swabhiman Festival, officials said on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to participate in the event on January 11.
The festival marks the completion of 1,000 years since the first major attack on the Somnath temple in 1026. Over the centuries, the temple was repeatedly looted and destroyed by foreign invaders but was rebuilt each time.
This history highlights the enduring national pride and strength of India’s civilisation. The festival’s central theme, ‘Unbreakable Faith’, emphasises the temple’s significance as a symbol of India’s permanent culture and spirit despite repeated assaults.
Earlier, in a blog post, Prime Minister Modi described the Somnath temple as an eternal declaration of the Indian spirit. He stated that while hatred and extremism may have the power to destroy for a moment, faith in goodness and strong belief have the power to build forever.
He noted that 2026 will mark 1,000 years since the first attack on the temple by invaders in January 1026.
Reflecting on the temple’s history and its destruction by invaders centuries ago, the Prime Minister said there is no better example of India’s indomitable civilisation than Somnath, which stands proudly today despite repeated attacks and great difficulties.
Recalling the time when foreign invaders attacked the temple worshipped by millions, PM Modi said their agenda was not devotion but destruction. He called 2026 an important year for this sacred place, marking 1,000 years since the first attack on the temple.
The Prime Minister also highlighted that 2026 will complete 75 years since the rebuilt temple was reopened to devotees, marking another significant milestone.
