PM Modi Shares Wisdom on True Friendship Through Sanskrit Shloka

New Delhi, October 5 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to the social media platform X on October 5 to share insights on friendship, accompanied by a Sanskrit shloka. He articulated that qualities such as purity of heart, sacrifice, emotional balance, courage, and sincerity define a person with a generous spirit and distinctive character.

The shloka shared by PM Modi reads: “शुचित्वं त्यागिता शौर्यं सामान्यं सुखदुःखयोः. दाक्षिण्यं चानुरक्तिश्च सत्यता च सुहृद्गुणाः॥” Its essence conveys that the traits of a true friend extend beyond mere acquaintance to embody a benevolent heart and unique personality.

This verse is sourced from the ancient text “Hitopadesha,” composed by Pandit Narayan Pandit, specifically from the section on friendship. It outlines the characteristics of a good friend, which include authenticity, generosity, bravery, emotional balance in joy and sorrow, skillfulness, love, and truthfulness.

According to the shloka, a true friend is someone who is pure and honest in both words and actions, free from deceit, and reliable. It is the duty of a friend to stand by their companion with courage during challenging times. A genuine friend remains humble in their friend’s happiness and supports them equally in times of distress.

The shloka further emphasizes that skillfulness in behavior, politeness, and respect for others are essential traits. There should be deep affection, loyalty, and attachment toward a friend, along with a commitment to honesty and transparency in relationships.
