Mumbai, August 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar during his monthly radio program, ‘Mann Ki Baat.’ He honored Kumar’s acting, personality, and struggles.
In his address, PM Modi noted, “In just a few days, on September 3, we will celebrate the centenary of Uttam Kumar. He was a versatile actor who won the hearts of many with his performances. Film enthusiasts believe that Satyajit Ray wrote the entire script of ‘Nayak – The Hero’ with Uttam Kumar in mind. Ray remarked on his dignity and profound emotional depth, highlighting the hard work he put into bringing characters to life.”
The Prime Minister also touched on other aspects of Uttam Kumar’s personality. He stated, “Uttam Kumar was known not only for his simplicity but also for his philanthropy. His life teaches us the importance of perseverance. Although his early films did not achieve great success, he remained focused on his work, which ultimately led to his remarkable achievements.”
PM Modi shared a personal memory related to Uttam Kumar, saying, “I remember passing by Uttam Kumar’s house during a roadshow in Kolkata. A person there gifted me a picture of him. Once again, I pay my respects to the legendary Uttam Kumar. He will always reign in our hearts.”
Uttam Kumar was born on September 3, 1926, in Calcutta, with the real name Arun Kumar Chattopadhyay. He began his film career with the 1948 movie ‘Drishtidan.’ His early films faced challenges, and he had to struggle for recognition.
Gradually, his pairing with actress Suchitra Sen became immensely popular. Together, they delivered several memorable films, and their on-screen chemistry marked a new era in Bengali cinema. Films like ‘Saptapadi,’ ‘Harano Sur,’ ‘Sagarika,’ ‘Indrani,’ and ‘Shilpi’ made him a household name. His performance in ‘Saptapadi’ is still regarded as one of the most iconic in Bengali cinema.
Uttam Kumar did not limit himself to the romantic hero image. In ‘Nayak,’ he portrayed a film star reflecting on his career, success, and personal life. This film remains one of his most talked-about works. He also played diverse roles in films like ‘Chiriakhana,’ ‘Jhindey Bondi,’ ‘Anthony Firingee,’ ‘Jatugriha,’ ‘Nishi Padma,’ and ‘Amanush.’
He ventured into direction and production, further solidifying his legacy in Bengali cinema. Uttam Kumar passed away on July 24, 1980.
