
New Delhi, March 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Swami Sudhindra Teerth of the Shri Kashi Math institution in Varanasi on Tuesday. He highlighted that the revered saint dedicated his life to service and spirituality.
In a post on the social media platform X, PM Modi stated, “On the special occasion of his birth centenary, I pay homage to Swami Sudhindra Teerth of the Shri Kashi Math institution in Varanasi. He devoted his life to service and spirituality.”
Emphasizing the contributions of the Swami, Modi remarked, “He established numerous institutions and research centers and was passionate about spreading the joy of education among people. His teachings emphasize simplicity, kindness, and devotion. His efforts to preserve and popularize India’s culture and values, which originated from our land, are equally commendable.”
Swami Sudhindra Teerth (March 31, 1926 – January 17, 2016), also known as Swami Sudhindra Teerth, was the legal and spiritual head of Kashi Math and the 20th continuous saint in its revered guru tradition.
He passed away at the age of 90 in Haridwar on Sunday morning. Widely respected for his spiritual leadership, he became the 20th head of Kashi Math in 1949 and served the longest term as the head of the math.
Born on March 31, 1926, in Ernakulam, Kerala, to Ramadas Shenoy and Draupadi, his original name was Sadashiv Shenoy. His father was a trustee of the Sri Venkataraman Temple in Ernakulam. He studied science, including physics and chemistry, at Maharaja College in Ernakulam.
During his college years, he took sannyasa initiation from his guru Sukritendra Teerth Swami in 1944 and was later appointed as his successor. After his initiation, he renounced worldly life and embarked on his spiritual journey.
Over the years, he played a significant role in the establishment and development of idols in various temples across the country, including those in Kasaragod, Gurupura, Mangaluru, Mumbai, Uppinangadi, and Moodbidri, leaving behind a lasting spiritual and cultural legacy.
