Mysuru, August 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Center, known as Vivek Smarak, in Mysuru. During the event, he highlighted the significance of Swami Vivekananda’s contributions to the region. Modi stated that those who recognize the seeker in their penance also share in their achievements. He noted that Mysuru played a pivotal role in Swami Vivekananda’s journey, as he visited the city nearly 130 years ago as a young monk.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the creation of greatness in individuals does not happen overnight. It requires enduring countless trials, engaging in spiritual practices, and undergoing personal sacrifices. While fame may attract attention, recognizing great figures during their struggles is often challenging.
Modi recalled a letter Swami Vivekananda sent to the Maharaja of Mysuru while in America, acknowledging the Maharaja’s support. He remarked that Vivekananda embodied Indian consciousness and absorbed the scriptures, asserting that true living is about serving others.
The Prime Minister praised the Ramakrishna Ashram for keeping Vivekananda’s legacy alive through educational and health services and disaster relief efforts. He expressed confidence that the Vivek Smarak would become a spiritual haven for seekers and devotees. He reiterated Vivekananda’s message that serving humanity is akin to serving the divine.
Modi pointed out that Vivekananda viewed youth education as a cornerstone for nation-building. He observed how countries worldwide were educating their youth while India was under colonial rule, leaving its young people shackled. From that era to today, India’s youth has made significant progress, transitioning from bondage to becoming a driving force for global development.
He noted that India’s economy is currently one of the fastest-growing in the world, largely due to the potential of its youth. India now boasts the third-largest startup ecosystem globally, a testament to the capabilities of its young population. Furthermore, India has emerged as the second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, with digital solutions developed in the country inspiring many nations. The nation is also rapidly advancing in semiconductor manufacturing.
Modi reiterated Vivekananda’s principle of “Shiv Jnane, Jeev Seva,” meaning that serving every being is equivalent to serving Lord Shiva. On this commemorative day, he called for nurturing youth who prioritize societal and national interests above their own, aiming for a generation that places the nation first and dedicates their lives to serving Mother India.
He stressed that Vivekananda believed in the equal importance of education and equality for national upliftment. The vision for the country now includes eliminating discrimination in education and opportunities. The modernization of the education system is aligned with contemporary needs, as the National Education Policy prepares Indian youth for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
Modi concluded by emphasizing the necessity for youth to maintain health, discipline, and self-confidence. Countries that prioritize sports see rapid development of these qualities in their youth. Consequently, sports are now viewed as a vital component of nation-building. Today, India has become the second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, with innovative digital solutions emerging as a source of inspiration for many countries, all thanks to the vigor of its youth.
